Manorville Youth Hostel
Westward Ho! North Devon

Manorville Youth Hostel Local Information

Westward Ho!  was named after Charles Kingsley’s novel Westward Ho! The book was first published in 1855 and was largely set around Bideford Quay. In the early 1860’s Westward Ho! was made up of just fields and pasture lands with a few farms scattered around the area.  By the mid 1860’s the first and second buildings (Manorville is No 2!) had been built and the country’s oldest golf course had been founded (Royal North Devon).

For many years Westward Ho! was only accessible to the upper classes. To keep its exclusivity the Victorians placed gates at the either end of the town. Manorville at this time in history was a grand Victorian Gentleman’s residence.

In 1919 the WSPU (Womens Social and Political Union) raised funds and purchased Manorville for Emily Pankurst the infamous suffragette. Emily went overseas to America and Manorville was sold in 1920.

Manorville has seen Westward Ho! change considerably over the years. It has prospered into a bustling tourist village with diverse buildings and stunning scenery. Westward Ho! Has all the typical English seaside pleasures like fish and chips, locally made ice creams and mouth watering Devonian cream teas!
